Tile red - the colour that fits anywhere
Tile red needs no introduction. Look around your village or town: most of the roofs wear this colour. It is not fashion - it is tradition. RAL 3009 gives exactly the warm, brownish red that clay tile has given for centuries - only lighter, more durable, and with no fuss.
It is no accident that this is our best-selling colour. Whoever chooses tile red is playing it safe - and there is nothing wrong with that. Why take a risk when there is a colour that always works?
Tile red is right for you if:
- You want to play it safe - a colour you are guaranteed not to regret
- The local building code (HÉSZ) prescribes a tile-coloured roof - RAL 3009 always passes
- You are extending an existing tile-roofed house or putting up an outbuilding, garage or barn next to it
- You want your roof to fit into the surroundings rather than stand out
- You are after a colour no one will ever ask "why did you pick that?" about
What is the difference between tile red and the other reds?
The RAL system contains several reds, but if your aim is for the roof to look like a real tile roof, RAL 3009 is your colour. It does not give you the shrill red of a brand-new tile, but the calm, mature tone of a tile roof a few years old. That is why it fits the surroundings straight away, even when the neighbour has genuine clay tiles.
RAL 3011, by contrast, is a deeper, more intense red - less keen on imitating tile, more of a stand-alone character. If the question is "which one is more like tile", the answer is clearly RAL 3009.
What is worth knowing in practice
It does not overheat in summer
Tile red sits in the middle of the pack - not as light as white, but far less hot than black or anthracite. On a blazing summer day the surface reaches around 57-65 °C. That means you do not need extra insulation or special ventilation because of it. A comfortable, straightforward option.
How does it behave over time?
We will be honest: like every colour, tile red fades a little over the years. Over 10-15 years the change is visible to the eye - the colour gradually softens and turns more brown.
And here is the twist: this is exactly an advantage for tile red. Real clay tile ages in the same way - the new is brighter, the old more muted. So the faded sheet ends up looking like a naturally aged tile roof. What is a drawback on other colours is outright a plus on tile red.
Protection and durability
The layer structure and rust protection of the sheet are exactly the same as for the other colours. Fading only affects the top layer of paint - the protective layers below keep working just the same.
Which wall colour goes with a tile red roof?
White wall + tile red roof: the classic
This is the most widespread combination in the country, and for good reason. Clean, tidy, works on every type of house. If you do not want to think too hard about colours, you cannot go wrong with this one.
Off-white (cream) wall: a warmer effect
If snow white is too cool for you, an off-white façade with a tile red roof gives a warmer, homelier feel. Rural elegance that never goes out of fashion.
Yellow or ochre wall: real countryside character
The signature colour pair of traditional Hungarian farmhouses. If you live in Transdanubia or on the Great Plain, this combination fits the surroundings perfectly.
Chocolate brown accessories (RAL 8017)
Gutter, flashing and window frame in chocolate brown, together with a tile red roof, give a traditional, cohesive look. Close enough in tone to harmonise, different enough not to feel monotonous.
Availability of accessories
Tile red is a base colour - gutter, flashing and roofing screw are in stock at virtually every supplier. You do not have to wait weeks for accessories.
Building permits: tile red always gets through
If there is one colour that will never give you trouble with the authorities, it is tile red. RAL 3009 is exactly the roof colour that Hungarian regulations treat as a "tile-coloured roof covering". Listed areas, the Balaton Uplands, landscape-protection zones, village-style districts - it is accepted everywhere.
This is tile red's biggest advantage over the other colours. Where anthracite, black or blue cannot even be considered, tile red is guaranteed to comply. A lot of our customers choose it precisely for this reason - one less worry during the build.
Installation - anything to watch out for?
Thermal expansion - nothing extra
Tile red heats up moderately, so expansion is not an issue either. On a 6-metre sheet expect around 4-4.5 mm of movement in summer - this is handled easily with standard fixing.
No washing needed
Dust practically blends into the warm, reddish surface. Even algae growth is not noticeable on this colour. Rain keeps it clean on its own - no ladder required.
How does a tile red roof age over the years?
Tile red has a quality that is true of no other colour - over time it does not get worse, it gets more natural.
A lively, warm tile red - the "new roof" effect. Clean, tidy, good-looking.
The colour gradually softens and turns more brown. From this point the sheet is practically indistinguishable from aged genuine clay tile. What is a drawback on other colours is an outright advantage here.
The fading is visible to the eye, but the overall look of the building stays attractive. Tile red falls into the rare category of colours where ageing does not harm the appearance - it actually gives it character.
If you ever need to touch up a small area, RAL 3009 touch-up paint is available at every specialist shop. Tile red is also one of the easiest colours to repair - precisely because the eye accepts natural differences in tone.
