Light brown - nature's warm, friendly shade
Think of freshly ploughed earth, the bark of a walnut tree, the warm colour of old brick walls. That is exactly what light brown looks like. Not as dark and decisive as chocolate brown, but far more characterful than plain galvanised. Whoever chooses it ends up with a building that fits the landscape as if it had always been there.
Many people are after the warmth of brown but find chocolate brown too dark. If that sounds like you, light brown is your colour. It heats up less in summer and looks at home in every setting. It is no surprise that more and more people are choosing it - especially in the countryside.
Who do we recommend it to?
- You are building or renovating a family house and want a natural, countryside appearance
- You are looking for a roof colour that matches the warmth of a timber or log house
- You are building in a wooded, hilly or agricultural setting where a landscape-fitting colour is expected
- You are building a fence that is more elegant than galvanised but less conspicuous than dark brown
- You are roofing an outbuilding or lean-to and want a match to the warm colours of the main building
Light brown or chocolate brown - which should you choose?
Both are excellent choices. The difference is in the mood and the setting.
Light brown (RAL 8003)
Warmer, softer effect. Heats up less in summer. Perfect with white walls, timber houses and country homes. Like the colour of walnut wood or dry clay.
Chocolate brown (RAL 8017)
Darker, more decisive. Really comes into its own on modern buildings and in wooded settings. Like dark chocolate - a strong, confident colour.
A simple rule: with a white or off-white wall, light brown gives a warmer, friendlier overall look. Next to a darker façade, chocolate brown is the winner.
What is worth knowing about light brown
It heats up less in summer
A light-brown roof is measurably cooler in summer than chocolate brown. In practice that means less heat in the loft and less stress on the insulation. In a heatwave you can feel the difference.
The colour stays for decades
Brown paints are among the most durable. Light brown stays attractive for more than 20 years - the slight shift goes in a warm, sandy direction, which is almost imperceptible in a natural setting. No need to worry about it weathering.
What does light brown go with?
Light-brown roof + white wall - the rural classic
This is the pairing most of our customers choose. A white façade and a warm brown roof together give a clean, tidy yet friendly overall look. It will still look good years from now.
Light brown + off-white wall - elegant harmony
If the walls are not snow white but a creamy, off-white shade, a light-brown roof is the perfect complement. Both colours are warm, and together they create a pleasant, homely mood.
Light brown + natural timber - natural harmony
For a log house or timber-clad building, light brown is the most natural choice. Wood and a brown roof fit together as if made for each other.
Light brown + green - the colours of the garden
Brown and green are nature's own pair - earth and foliage. For fencing and garden buildings this combination fits beautifully into a green setting.
Local building code (HÉSZ)
Good news: light brown is permitted almost everywhere. Alongside tile red, brown roof covering is accepted in most municipalities - including landscape- and nature-protected areas. With this colour you are certain not to run into trouble with the authorities.
Installation notes
Thermal expansion - moderate
Light brown sits among the mid-light colours. On a 6-metre sheet expect around 4-4.5 mm of movement, which is handled easily by standard fixing.
Maintenance - virtually none
Dirt blends into the earthy base; almost nothing shows on it. One wash a year is plenty, and many do not even do that.
Choice of screws
For light-brown sheet, brown roofing screws are recommended. They blend into the surface nicely and are almost invisible.
Accessories
Gutter and flashing in brown are widely available. Both light- and dark-brown accessories look good next to it.
How does the light-brown corrugated sheet age?
Light brown is one of the most beautifully ageing colours. Here is what you can expect.
Warm, even brown. The surface is glossy, the building looks fresh. Nothing for us to do.
Barely noticeable change. The colour may turn slightly warmer, but this makes it prettier rather than worn.
The colour becomes slightly sandier - this looks particularly good in the countryside, as if the building were part of nature. Many people love it for exactly this reason.
Light brown is the best-ageing colour in the brown family. It still gives a tidy, well-kept look even after 20 years - no need to worry about it.
